Crunch time for Fiji's Men's and Women's Teams
For the past few weeks our national men's and women's team have been training very hard for the upcoming Zonal and World Championship Phase 1 Qualifier.
Women's coach Basilio Kalokalodromu said both teams have been training together as early as 5am to 7am a few mornings a week. Their training schedule involve court work, gym sessions and physical training outdoors. The women's team who have already qualified and are moving onto Phase 2 which will be held in Thailand next year will be playing in the Zonal competition. However the Men's team have a tough challenge ahead of them as they have to beat New Zealand and Tonga next week in order to move up to Phase 2. This is the first time that Fiji is hosting a world championship of such magnitude. FVF President Ms Elesi Ketedromo said this is huge in terms of volleyball development and a huge step up for the organizing committee to provide the best for this world event. Ms Ketedromo added that this is just the beginning of better things to come for volleyball in Fiji as we intend to showcase to world volleyball that Fiji can also host a world volleyball series or even the World Volleyball Championship. |
1st Phase Men's World Qualifying Round
Fiji will host the first round of men's world qualification to the 2018 World Championship for Oceania region at the Vodafone Arena from the 24th to the 29th of October 2016. This is the first in Fiji for volleyball. This is a huge opportunities in many aspect for volleyball in Fiji, from the successful hosting of the Oceania games that were held in May this year. We are again fortunate to have the confidence of the Oceania committee to host the first men's qualifying rounds for the Oceania Region.

Fiji women's teams have already qualified to round two. Our men's volleyball team will need to win against New Zealand and Tonga in this tournament to qualify to round two. Together in this qualifying round there will also be competition amongst the two Oceania zones; Central and Eastern, called the Oceania Zonal Competition. We have a total of ten teams that have confirmed their participation. The team registration closes on the 30th of September and we are confident that there would be more teams from Oceania region visiting our shores.
It will be a week of international, high level, competitive volleyball. This is an added bonus as it would be a good preparation game for our women's team and our development men's team to play against other Oceania teams. Fiji's continuous hosting of international volleyball only shows the confidence that Oceania Volleyball has in Fiji and the capabilities that Fiji has to host more international games.

Fiji Volleyball Federation Launches New Strategic and Branding Direction
On Saturday 29 August, Fiji Volleyball Federation (FVF) launched its new branding and strategic plan which aims to bring together the new strategic goals for the sport working collaboratively with stakeholders, partners both at government and non-government level, donors, corporate bodies and members of Fiji Volleyball Federation.
The launch of the new strategic plan and FVF brand was a great success with Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Iliesa Delana attending as the special guest to officially launch the new logo on the day.
Fiji Volleyball Federation Council and Board members along with important stakeholders worked hard on developing a new strategic plan and brand throughout the year. The journey toward this new direction began in February 2015 with the help of Talemo Waqa and his team at Kiliati Consultants who conducted the strategic planning workshops with the federation.
Workshops towards planning this new strategic direction were possible through the Australian Government funded Pacific Volleyball Partnership (PVP) Program which, along with changing the behavior patterns towards physical activity in communities and decreasing the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), aims to improve the strategic planning and governance for its national sporting body. Consequently, Fiji Volleyball Federation has recently been shortlisted for a Beyond Sport Award 2015 for Federation/Governing Body of the Year through its achievements with the PVP program.
The new vision of Fiji Volleyball Federation will see the unfolding of strategic areas outlined in the revised and refreshed Strategic Plan for 2016-2019. Guests who attended the launch included donor agencies, council members from all over Viti Levu and representatives from the Fiji Sports Commission and FASANOC.
With this new and strong foundation of planning, Fiji Volleyball Federation has a positive attitude for future plans and excited to communicate them with its members and important stakeholders.

Fiji Volleyball Federation Shortlisted for Beyond Sports Award 2015
Fiji Volleyball Federation (FVF) has been named on the prestigious Official Shortlist for the Beyond Sport Awards 2015 for Federation/Governing Body of the Year. The Beyond Sport Awards promote, support and reward the best projects across the globe that are using sport for positive social change. Fiji Volleyball Federation is involved in running the Australian Sports Commission funded Pacific Volleyball Partnership (PVP) program in Fiji which aims to reduce the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) through increased village level participation in the sport of volleyball, focusing on women and girls. Through this initiative, the federation has been selected as one of 36 shortlisted organisations out of more than 350 organisations worldwide that entered this year’s Awards.
PVP targets women in villages of Rewa province, on the outskirts of Suva. All participants are of Itaukei heritage and range from age 17 to 85. The reasons the program specifically targets women and girls are twofold: twice as many women than men are obese and women lack safe and accessible opportunities to participate in sport and/or physical activity.
The Beyond Sport awards were set up to help community sporting programs grow, thrive, and increase the ability to create positive impact. Taking place in London this year from 19th to 21st October, the seventh annual Beyond Sport Summit will bring together the world of sport, business, government and community development with a powerful and timely theme: Beyond the Divide, which addresses how sport can be used to reduce ignorance, discrimination and exclusion. This year’s theme mirrors the values of the PVP program through dedication to inclusiveness of women and people with disabilities in sports with many of the program’s volunteers attending workshops to improve upon their knowledge in these areas. The Summit will include a special ceremony to present the Beyond Sport Awards for 2015.
As one of four in the category of Sport Federation or Governing Body of the Year, Fiji Volleyball Federation is among sporting bodies from around the world including International Tennis Federation (Global), National Hockey League (NHL) (USA) and National Rugby League (NRL) (Australia).
With the hard work from a team of dedicated volunteers for the program, the Federation is elated with the news of being shortlisted for the award. PVP is already one step closer to achieving its goal of creating sustainable behaviour change in relation to sport with the formation of the Tebara Volleyball Association after the support given through the program.

Kadavu Volleyball Outreach Program
Fiji Volleyball Federation (FVF) conducted a week-long community and school outreach program across three villages on the picturesque island of Kadavu in June 2015. A team of five officials and a volunteer media officer traveled over to conduct the technique and rules of volleyball workshops. The team was kindly welcomed by the generous villages of Yavulo, Raki Raki and Vacalea during their visit.
The program also offered lessons on the rules of the games and how to run a tournament. This valuable information particularly helped the community of Vacalea to facilitate the recent tournament held there for a collection of villages across Kadavu.
The team experienced traditional sevusevu ceremonies in all the villages they visited and enjoyed the kind company and hospitality of the people in these communities.
